About PrairieLearn

PrairieLearn is an open-source learning and assessment platform used by major research universities to author, deliver, and grade assignments at scale. The product handles real student traffic at universities including the University of Illinois, Cornell, McMaster, and others. The team is investing heavily in LLM-based tooling — agents that help instructors generate questions, rubrics, and feedback.

What you'll do

  • Build full-stack features across the assessment platform and its AI tooling layer
  • Design and ship LLM agents that help instructors author and grade
  • Contribute to a mature open-source codebase used by real students daily
  • Collaborate with instructors and researchers driving the platform forward

What they're looking for

  • Strong full-stack experience (Node.js/TypeScript, React, Postgres)
  • Comfort working in a large open-source codebase
  • Interest in building LLM-backed features with real users (not prototypes)
  • Based in the US (the role is US-remote only)
