About focal
focal is an early-stage venture firm investing in software and infrastructure companies. The firm runs its own internal AI and data systems to source deals, support due diligence, and help portfolio companies operate better. They're hiring their first dedicated tech leader to own that stack end-to-end.
What you'll do
- Define and lead the technology + AI strategy across the firm
- Architect and build the AI/data systems used internally and across portfolio companies
- Operate as a hands-on senior IC — this is not a managerial-only role
- Partner with investing team on product, technical diligence, and portfolio support
What they're looking for
- Senior engineering background with deep, recent hands-on coding
- Strong AI/ML systems experience (production LLM work, agents, data pipelines)
- Comfortable defining a tech function from scratch — no team to inherit
- US-based; remote is fine, can flex onsite/hybrid for the right person
